WHYYYYYYY did I do it again?! 😫
We've all been there: standing in the pantry, 1/2 a bag of chips down, not even knowing why we're there or how we ate that much. Or whatever YOUR version of mindless eating looks like. If you stress eat, you're far from alone. It usually starts with some stressful situation or thought, we grab the food on autopilot not really even thinking about what we're doing or making a conscious choice. Then we realize what we're doing and go down the shame/blame spiral about how horrible we are, we'll never be in control, we'll never succeed at losing weight, we suck. Which of course creates more stress and increases the likelihood that we'll do it again.
If you're trying to lose weight and get healthy, stress/emotional eating is a MAJOR stumbling block that will keep you stuck if it's not addressed. And THIS is a major reason why those diet results never last - most diets only aim to control WHAT you eat, not understand WHY you're eating it.
There's 3 main reasons why stress eating is happening:
1. it WORKS - eating literally releases calming hormones in your brain
2. you're "buffering" - a behavior performed to AVOID a difficult thought or emotion (to not deal with the tough stuff)
3. your brain needed a break - overwhelm is real, but WHY is it happening? what does your brain need a break from?
In this episode I'm going to break down 3 strategies to help you STOP emotional eating in it's tracks. We're going to interrupt the auto-pilot behavior patterns with conscious and purposeful thoughts and actions.

You will only ever be as healthy as your relationships
The quality of your relationships will absolutely determine the quality of your health. You probably already intuitively understand the truth in this, but it's important you understand this on an even deeper level. Your relationships, good and bad, are having a profound effect on your ability to get and stay healthy.
We were created to be social beings, to rely on others, and be relied on by them. This has become MOST apparent in the last few years of lockdowns and forced separation. In the US, rates of depression, anxiety, suicide and drug use are higher than they've been in our lifetime before. Certainly this is due to many factors, but we cannot deny the role that lack of positive social interaction is playing.
In this episode we're going to address:
- who is in your circle and how they are influencing you
- the behavioral, psychosocial and physiological effects of those relationships on your health
- how to deal with stressful or toxic relationships
- how to find your cheer squad and surround yourself with supportive people
If you want to get and stay healthy, live longer, be happier, and have less stress you MUST address the relationships in your life that affect you the most. I hope this episode opens your eyes a bit to not only how those relationships are influencing you, but also how YOU are showing up and affecting others. Remember relationships are reciprocal - sometimes if we want different results, it's on us to show up differently.

Do you want to hibernate in the winter?
If you live in colder northern states and countries, especially ones above the 45th parallel listen up! (YES that's us my Washington friends!) According to the Cleveland clinic, about 75% of Americans who have Seasonal Affective Disorder are WOMEN and about 10%-20% of Americans (again mostly women) suffer from "winter blues" a milder form of SAD. That's about 67 million people, and I actually think a lot more because "winter blues" is not a diagnosis that's often tracked.
In the wintertime if you feel down, lethargic, in a funk, put on weight, have less energy, have more cravings, etc. I want you to know IT'S NOT JUST IN YOUR HEAD, & YOU CANNOT "JUST GET OVER IT"!
Winter blues and SAD are very real, but there's also A LOT you can do to reduce symptoms and help yourself out. In this episode I'm going to break down WHY this is affecting so many of us and some tangible things you can do right now to start helping.

Well HELLO AGAIN! It's been a minute, but I'm back and ready to rock! Today we're talking about how to get unstuck, and overcome the overwhelm and stress. In large part because that's what I've been struggling with for the last few months.
I know you've been here: you spread yourself too thin, things are happening that you have no control over, it all feels too much! So, you turn to alcohol, food, Netflix, or in my case, you just "turn off". No matter what, we all have coping strategies, the question is; is your coping strategy helping or keeping you stuck?
In this episode, I'm giving you the 4 strategies I've been using to get myself unstuck and moving forward after a season of stress and overwhelm.
1. identify your coping strategies, and give yourself grace
2. prioritize where you put your energy
3. ask for help
4. make a plan

Today we're talking about the power of gratitude and how to harness that power in your own life. Gratefulness goes well beyond just being thankful when things go well. The challenge is finding things to be grateful for even when things are hard. Gratefulness is a not just a state of being thankful, its also a trait, it's the way you see the world. Cultivating more gratitude in your life isn't hard at all but it does require intention.

Better Relationships Start with Better Communication | Top 5 Skills You Need

Do you argue or communicate?
Being an effective communicator is not something you just KNOW how to do. You have to learn those skills and most of us don't. Many of us were not modeled effective communication in our homes, or even schools and workplaces, so it's no wonder we struggle with it now.
When I was a couples therapist for a while I kept seeing communication break down in the SAME patterns in almost EVERY relationship. In this episode I'm going to share those top 5 patterns and the 5 skills you need to develop in order to overcome them. And these skills don't just apply to your marriage, these 5 communication skills will help you in every conversation in every relationship.
The 5 skills are:
- Preparation: in order to be an effective communicator you have to be SUPER clear on your own thoughts, feelings, experiences, etc. BEFORE going into the conversation. I give you my whole system for clarity before the conversation happens
- Listen more than you speak: to be an effective communicator you have to be an effective listener and truly seek to understand (though not necessarily agree with) the other person. Listening is a skill, I'll teach you how.
- Ask more than you tell: asking good questions is the KEY to being a good communicator. Communicating is not just expressing how YOU feel, it's about understanding and having empathy for how the other person feels. My main job as a therapist was asking good questions, I'll teach you how to as well.
- Don't attack or blame or guilt trip: I saw this so much in couples therapy. You need to go into a conversation with the assumption that the other person had and has good intentions.
Your communication STYLE also matters - are you aggressive, assertive, passive or passive aggressive? We'll discuss all of these, and I'm going to call you out a bit on being passive or passive aggressive and how to recognize that.
- Check your vibes: if the other person doesn't want to talk, you might need to check the energy you're approaching with. So often I see people trying to approach a conversation with the body language of "I've already decided you're guilty, let's talk about everything you did wrong!" No one is going to want to participate in that conversation.

Has your waist measurement been creeping up over the years?
I hear this a lot, and now that I'm in my 40's I'm experiencing it. For me personally, two major things have changed: I'm in peri-menopause, so hormone changes are an issue, and I'm now sitting in front of my computer or microphone WAY more than I ever have so I'm moving less during the day. Just those two seemingly small changes have added up to some extra fluff.
If your belly fat has been increasing over the years, there may or may not be cause for concern. Many healthy people (especially women who have had children) carry a little extra fluff around the middle and it's really not negatively affecting their health. That's because it's mainly subcutaneous fat. You might not love it aesthetically, but health wise it's probably fine.
The real problem with a growing waistline is the increasing amount of visceral fat. Visceral fat is deeper in your abdomen, surrounds your organs, and actually releases inflammatory compounds leading to a whole host of chronic diseases including heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Increasing visceral fat IS hazardous to your health and as subcutaneous fat increases, usually so does visceral fat.
In this episode we're going to discuss:
- What is belly fat, how do we get it, why might it be increasing?
- What can make belly fat dangerous?
- Why do you want to lose belly fat? For health reasons, or to get a 6-pack? Your WHY is important.
- HOW do you lose belly fat?
Spoiler alert: you shouldn't be shocked to find out that there is no magic pill, potion, exercise, or food that will magically help you shed belly fat. There are however a few specific things you can focus on that will help you lose fat overall AND will help you store less visceral fat.

It's another one of those episodes where I'm gonna say all the stuff that no one else will 😂
I'm gonna call you out on the BS, with LOVE. Here's the truth; we've all had victim mentality in some way in some situation in our life. Usually it's in small ways that you might not have recognized as victim mentality.
Here's some examples:
- You told your boss that you didn't get the report to her on time because Karen didn't do HER part on time.
- You've said something like "you make me SO angry" (hint: no one can MAKE you feel any certain way)
- You've decided something like "I'm this way because of you"
- You can't let someone else's crappy behavior go and you keep stewing on it for way too long.
- Something bad happened to you and you've decided you'll just always be "broken"
- You're always "waiting for the other shoe to drop"
- If you get fired it's "because my boss is a total b&!*h"
- Something goes wrong and you just give up "what's the use in trying?"
See? It comes out in little ways that we don't always recognize as victim mentality. The problem is we get totally stuck here. We get totally frozen in our victimhood instead of taking responsibility for figuring out how to move forward.
I also want to be really clear that I understand that trauma is real, being an ACTUAL victim of something awful is real, having to deal with terrible situations and terrible people is REAL. But you still have the choice of whether to let that situation define you and keep you stuck in victimhood, or if you'll do the work to move forward.
Today, I'm going there. You might feel a bit triggered, you might not like the feeling of recognizing some of these things in yourself, but if you want to get unstuck, you need to hear them.

It's SO confusing!
Eat healthy and exercise. It seems like simple enough advice, but when you try to actually put that into practice it starts to get WAY more complicated! Like what am I actually supposed to DO?
When I was in high school healthy eating was choosing Subway over Taco Bell. As a college athlete healthy eating was pregame carb loading. As an adult, healthy eating was trying to eat more vegetables instead of the leftover macaroni and nuggets from my kids plates. None of those versions of healthy choices were necessarily wrong or right, but NOW, I know more, so I can do better. And that's what I want for you too.
We've been fed SO much conflicting advice over the years. Your friend says her way of eating the BEST for losing weight. That girl on Insta says you should eat THIS way. Your doctor, if they even talk to about food, has a different approach. The commercial on TV says this food is a healthy choice. And even the government chimes in with THEIR version of healthy eating. Who do we listen to? Who is RIGHT?
There ARE foods that, physiologically, are better choices for your health and body functioning than other foods. However I do NOT play the good food/bad food game. Instead I make educated choices about what I want to eat, why I want it, and how it'll make me feel.
In this episode I want to help you learn how to sift through all the conflicting information, and help you start to make the best, most healthy food choices for YOU.
