Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? 😫
Do you ever feel like you've totally HAD it! You're doing all the right things - you're watching what you eat, you started the diet, you're working out way more, and the scale hasn't budged. What gives!?
Well honestly there could be A LOT of reasons that why this is the case but I believe in starting with the most common and the easiest to tackle reason: you're doing too much.
"No I'm NOT" you want to argue with me! "How could I possibly be doing too much, if I don't diet and exercise I won't lose weight!" Yes, I'm familiar with this argument, I've used it myself many times.
We've been told our whole lives that eating less and working out more is the only way to lose weight. Less calories in, more calories out is the key. Would it blow your mind if told you that sometimes more calories in and LESS workouts are the key to getting your body working right and long term weight loss that will STAY off?
It's true and it's largely due to stress and cortisol. You see, a diet, no mater which one it is, is usually just a fancy form of calorie restriction. Not getting enough food puts your body under tremendous stress. Add on top of that all these new strenuous workouts you're doing now to burn calories; more stress to your body. Then add to that all the other emotional stress in your life, lack of sleep, poor hydration, use of stimulants (coffee); stress, stress STRESS! Your body under chronic stress and chronically elevated cortisol levels begins to burn itself out, your metabolism slows, you're more likely to store fat especially around the midsection, and you're more at risk for disorders and diseases of all types. Well Crap!
In this episode we're going to discuss these mechanisms, how sometimes you have to SLOW DOWN TO SPEED UP and exactly HOW you can do that.

It's a Complicated Cultural Conundrum . . .
We're fed so much BS about how we SHOULD feel about ourselves, most of us have totally lost sight of how we actually DO feel about ourselves. Diet Culture tells us that we don't measure up if we don't look this way, eat this way, exercise this way, etc. The Body Positivity Culture tells that we should love ourselves however we look but if we don't love ourselves then we somehow don't measure up to the standards of that either!
These two ideas suggest that I CANNOT both love myself and not love myself at the same time.
So I'm calling BS again!
The simple answer is that HOWEVER you feel about your body is okay. It might not be helpful, but it IS okay. And yes, you absolutely CAN love yourself but also want to change yourself as well. Neither Diet Culture nor Body Positivity Culture make room for this conversation, so I am!
In this episode we'll explore:
- What is Body Positivity Culture? What does it get right and what does it get wrong?
- How do I change my body image? Where does it come from?
- What if I DON'T honestly love myself all the time? What then?
- What if I DO want to change something about myself? Why is that "bad"?
- The importance of health vs looks - how to shift your focus
- Why your body positive affirmations aren't working and what to do instead
I try not to subscribe to either culture (although it's so prevalent, that's hard!) because the truth, as usual, lies somewhere in the middle. Somewhere in the space between resenting our perceived "flaws" and achieving self-love, lies the sweet spot on the path of self-improvement and appreciation. The spot where you can just BE.

What is Diet Culture?
I guarantee you have internalized diet culture messages and don't even realize it.
Have you ever thought:
- I'm not losing weight on this diet, what's wrong with me?
- That food is bad, I can't eat that, it'll make me fat
- I wish my (insert body part) looked like that/hers
- I don't have enough willpower to stay skinny
- I can't wear that, I'm too fat
- the only way to lose weight is to cut calories and exercise harder
- hmmmm one "weird secret" to lose weight fast? I'm in!
- I worked out, I deserve that piece of cake
- I totally ate "bad" yesterday so I did an extra 30 minutes on the treadmill today
Oh you have? Ya me too. These are ALL diet culture messages that we have internalized as truth. Diet culture is the pervasive belief system that values looks above health. It attaches worthiness to your ability to ability to look, eat, exercise etc. in the ways diet culture says are acceptable.
Today my objective is to bring your awareness to what diet culture is, how it has already shaped your thoughts about yourself and others, and how you can start overcoming that. I want to be super clear that even though I'm DEFINITELY going to be challenging you today, and you might feel really triggered at times, my intention is never to blame or shame. I'm challenging with love, because sometimes change requires some difficult self reflection.

The Gyms are opening back up!!
So if you haven't been going, I'm going to encourage you to get in there and pick up some weights!
I know, I know, the weight room is intimidating, I get it! You walk in there and there's sweaty dudes grunting, you're not sure what to do or if you're doing it right, and you just end up walking right back out.
Resistance exercise, especially compound movements, that are NOT on machines, as SO important for your health. Muscle is the fountain of youth!
So I'm going to encourage you to stop using your intimidation as an excuse.
I said what I said, it's an excuse!
There are plenty of ways you can learn to incorporate weight training more into your routine. Maybe it's an at home program? Maybe you take a class in the gym? Maybe you go to an all women's gym? Maybe get the help of a trainer?
The point is, there are a TON of ways to get help with learning how to incorporate weight training into your workouts, you just have to pick one, take the initiative and go for it!
Today, I'm going to dispel the three biggest weight training myths I hear from women:
"Cardio is better for burning fat than weight training"
"I just want to "tone" not bulk up"
"Women should stick to machines/need to workout differently than men"
I hope that by setting the record straight, I'll encourage you and give you the confidence you need to ask for help, and learn how to start adding resistance exercise into your routine. Habit Stacking | How to Easily Create New Healthy Habits

Your habits will make or break your success . . .
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit" a quote attributed to Aristotle. And he's absolutely right. Change, success, reaching your goals, etc. is not some grand gesture, it's the accumulation of all the small things you did a long the way. Things so small you probably think won't make a bit of difference, but when added together, compounded over time, add up to the success you're after. Habits have a way of compounding over time. One small habit will lead to other actions and habits that all add up to your ultimate success or failure.
Wouldn't health, weight loss, and wellness be a whole lot easier if you didn't have to rely on willpower, discipline, or motivation to achieve them? Wouldn't it be so much easier if you started consciously developing habits that kept you moving on the right trajectory automatically? Establishing healthy habits will start to put your health journey on autopilot. To get healthy and stay that way, you MUST address and adjust the habits you've established both good and bad. If you don't like the results you have right now, peel back a layer and uncover the habits that have gotten you there.
In today's episode I'm going to walk you through how to use "habit stacking" to start developing new healthy habits. It's not a complicated process, but there's definitely a right way to add new habits so that you'll actually do them and continue to do them consistently over time. Let's Get Back to the Basics . . .
Here's the deal; you can try ANY diet you want to, but it will NEVER work long term unless you are first performing these 3 basics consistently. And NO, they don't have anything to do with what you're eating.
There's a lot of ways to lose weight, there's a lot of ways to get healthy, different strategies work for different people because we're all different!
But there are 3 basics that transcend all diets, strategies and plans. Three things, that if you don't have them down, it won't matter what your diet strategy is because in the end you'll fail.
We're all so quick to jump on the newest diet, the complicated and time consuming strategy, the restrictive plan, but we completely overlook the basics. And even if that diet works short term, all the weight will come back in the long term without these 3 basics. So what are they?
chronic mild dehydration
chronic sleep deprivation
chronic stress
If you can't commit to staying properly hydrated, getting enough sleep, and managing stress, your weight loss and health efforts will ultimately fail. Seriously, don't even bother starting that diet unless you can consistently perform these three things.
All three of these, ON THIER OWN, program your body to crave sweet and salty foods, store more fat, and burn less fat. Now imagine the uphill battle you're facing if you suffer from all 3!
In today's episode we're going to break down these 3 Basics, and then I'll tell you what to do about them!

What's Wrong with Me?
Have you ever wondered if those "happy" people you see know something that you don't? Why don't YOU feel happy all the time when THEY seem to?
Let me be clear, I'm not talking about clinical depression in this episode, I'm talking a general unhappiness. A feeling of being stuck, in a funk, and not "happy" even though you "should" be.
The truth is, there ARE some secrets to feeling happier more often! And you probably wont be shocked to hear it's all about perspective. In this episode I'm going to give you some tips for happiness that you probably haven't heard before, like:
the 50/50 Rule - it's not always roses, sometimes there's thorns
comparison is the thief of joy - how to stop playing the comparison game
how to guard you heart and mind - what your mind consumes, matters
solid foundation - what are your guiding principles and where do they come from?
You've heard the saying that "happiness is a state of mind" but there's more to it than that. And there are actual, tangible things you can do to increase how often you FEEL happy, and better ways to manage when you don't.

But isn't that what I'm supposed to do?
We've always been told we need to eat every couple hours to keep that metabolism burning, keep that furnace stoked! But what if I told you that advice is likely making you fat, or at the very least keeping you fat? 😱
#sorrynotsorry if I just blew up your whole eating paradigm, but it's for your own good!
Eating every couple hours, or 6 small meals a day, is completely working AGAINST the way your body was designed. Your body wasn't made for a constant intake of food energy (calories) all day long and when it's constantly being fed, you're more likely to be storing those calories as fat. I mean, just think logically; does it even make sense that eating all day long would be good for weight loss? EVEN IF the food is in small portions.
Just because you've heard advice over and over again DOESN'T mean it's good advice! Spoiler Alert: there's not one bit of scientific evidence showing that eating every couple of hours does ANYTHING to either speed up your metabolism, or burn more calories through the day. There is however a mountain of evidence that shows it could absolutely be detrimental to your metabolism, reduce insulin sensitivity, and cause you to store more fat.

what the science says about HOW you should eat
what happens in your body when you eat and how to optimize it
what it really takes to lose weight (aka lose fat)
how to eat instead of 6 small meals and what it takes to do that

How is this happening again!?
"Last summer I swore I would lose weight by the next summer so I'd look cuter in my shorts, tanks, and swimsuits. But here I am again, looking the same, and not wanting to show my body". UGH!
Sound familiar?
I may or may not say those words EVERY summer LOL! The interesting thing is, I say those words no matter what my body actually looks like. Heavier, thinner, more muscular, less muscular, it doesn't matter, every summer is the same. Here we go again . . .
What if we could stop that? What if we could love ourselves right where we are? How did we even develop the idea of what a "summer body" even looks like and whether or not we have one? What are we missing out on by hating our bodies with less clothes on? What is this arbitrary standard that I'm judging myself against? Why do I care so much about what I THINK others think about how I look in a swimsuit?
When you read the title of this episode, were you like "YES girl! Tell me the secret because I'm running out of time and don't want to wear this mumu coverup again this year!"
