Should I Track Macro's to Lose Weight?
The fit 20 something girl on Instagram says "flexible dieting" is how you too can look like her. The trainer at the gym says "tracking macro's" is the only science based way to lose weight. That ad on Facebook says "IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macro's)" is the only way to lose weight effectively.
And I say . . . . . Bull Sh*t! 😂
You ABSOLUTELY DO NOT have to track anything in order to get healthy, lose weight, and stay that way.
After our calorie discussion from episode 14, I got some questions regarding my thoughts on tracking macro's and if it would work for them. The simple answer is this: you're asking the wrong question. You SHOULD be asking whether a method like macro tracking is in line with your goals and your lifestyle, and if you'll stick to it long term. I don't teach macro counting as a strategy to my clients for several reasons that I'll outline in the podcast, but the biggest reason is that for MOST people it's not a long term sustainable lifestyle. I've said it before and I'll say it again: short term solutions give short term results, long term solutions give long term results. I teach LONG TERM solutions.
But my REAL goal is for you to be able to make informed decisions for yourself, not have another person (me) telling you what to do, so I'm going to lay it all out for you and you can make your own informed decision. In this episode we're going to cover:
- what are macro's
- what's involved in a macro tracking program
- what are the benefits of a macro tracking program, YES there are some benefits
- what the drawbacks of a macro tracking program
- If I decide it's not for me, what else can I do that will work?
I've seen so many people using macro tracking as a short term plan, and they DO get results. But like any other diet, once they stop the program, they're right back where they started. The Next Right Thing
As humans, we're REALLY good at overcomplicating things aren't we? Speaking from personal experience here, it's crazy to me how sometimes the simple solution doesn't even occur to me. I get so stuck on the idea that "it can't be that simple, it must be harder" and then I MAKE it harder! Can you relate? I know I'm not the only one!
I think this is especially true when it comes to weight loss and health. We're so quick to jump on the complicated diet, the one with all the rules because we think the more elaborate it is the better it should work. All the while we miss the simplest, most BASIC strategies, skills and tools. And then we can't figure out why it didn't work or why we didn't stick to it.
Most of us get fed up with where we're at, and we decide to take drastic action. We try to make big sweeping changes that are hard to sustain. We go from ice cream every night to keto, or from fast food dinners to kale salad. It's too much too soon. Instead I teach clients to stretch out change, and approach it in a progression. Move from fast food burgers every night to 4 nights, then 2 nights, then making your own healthy version etc. The progression allows you to start moving from being the person who eats fast food every night, to becoming the person who cooks a healthy dinner every night. That change takes more time, but it will LAST and isn't that what we really want?
In this episode I'm going to teach you the very simple, yet super powerful concept of just doing the NEXT RIGHT THING. I'll walk you through an exercise we use in the WW Program to identify what your Next Right Thing is, and how to implement it. Grab a pen and paper and get ready to write it out!

The Truth About Calories and Weight Loss
Why is losing weight so hard?
Isn't it just a matter of eat less, burn more, and the scale will start moving, or are we missing something here?
Every major diet on the market is based on tracking and restricting calories in some way. Every diet you've probably tried has involved some version of calorie control through packaged food, tracking on an app, counting points, only eating certain foods in certain proportions etc. You know the drill. You've been there, done that, probably multiple times!
The calories in/calories out diet model is THE accepted model for weight loss, you'll hear it from your doctor, dietician, trainer, the girl on insta, reality tv weight loss shows, EVERYWHERE! It's taught in the schools and programs that train all those professionals, I was even taught this model early on.
So the question becomes - if being on a "calorie deficit" diet was THE answer to losing weight, why are 80% of Americans overweight or obese DESPITE 33 million of them being on a calorie restriction diet at any given time?
Clearly there's more to the problem of weight loss and weight gain than a simple calories in/calories out model. Everybody has that friend who eats whatever she wants, and twice as much as you, but doesn't gain a pound. Meanwhile you eat half as much as she does, but if you so much as smell a cookie your thighs get bigger. Clearly it's NOT the calories. Her body is obviously functioning better than yours. And spoiler alert - she didn't get her body to function optimally by dieting harder or starving herself more, like you're probably doing on that diet.
In this episode we're going to discuss:
- what calories ARE, where the concept of calorie and the 1200 calorie diet came from
- why counting calories, cutting or adding calories is NOT the answer for long term weight loss
- the other factors that are actually controlling how your body absorbs, regulates, and utilizes the calories
- how your calorie restrictive diet have destroyed your metabolism and you mindset
- what the body systems are that ACTUALLY matter for long term weight loss like gut health, liver health, and hormonal balance - and how to heal them
- how to shift your mindset from short term diet mentality to long term health and lasting weight loss

Emotional Eating
That term gets used a lot, but what does it mean? And more importantly what does it mean to YOU? Emotional eating shows up in many forms but the underlying mechanism is always the same - avoidance of difficult emotions resulting in eating when we're not physically hungry - aka overeating. Unfortunately, most of the time we don't even realize we're doing it until we're already doing it! Then we spiral into guilt and shame, creating more negative emotions we want to avoid. It's a viscous cycle we get stuck in and the emotional eating doesn't stop. In this episode I want to help you define emotional eating, get real with yourself about how and why it's happening for you, and what you can start doing about it right now, today!

That's what we call any type of "digestive distress" in our house LOL. But gut health goes WAY beyond bubble guts, an unhealthy gut is at the root of most metabolic and chronic disorders. Gut dysbiosis and leaky gut are estimated to affect 80% of us Americans! We simply cannot address long term weight loss, health, and wellness without addressing the health of our guts, aka our small and large intestines and the colonies of bacteria that live in them.
In the last episode we learned all about what your "gut" actually is and how it works. If you haven't listened to episode 10 - "Trust Your Gut" go back and do that now. I'm totally serious! I think your bathroom scale is a torture device and I want to help you end your obsession with it. In fact I want us to end our obsession with weight all together! I know that sounds like a tall order but I promise it's possible! Imagine a life where you you don't care what the number is, where you never have to get upset or angry, or frustrated, or discouraged by that stupid number every day. Imagine how much mental energy it would free up? I can tell you, as someone who has overcome the battle with the scale, it's so freeing! I know, this is freaking you out a little, that should be the first sign that you need an intervention.
